Staff Product Manager, Machine Learning
Overstory
Remote: United States
The climate crisis is the defining challenge of our time—but it’s also the greatest opportunity for innovation, and a challenge we’re proud to take on. At Overstory, we’re harnessing cutting-edge technology to enable a resilient electrical grid that keeps communities thriving as our world changes.
The grid is the backbone of life as we know it. It powers hospitals, keeps food fresh, and ensures communities stay connected. But extreme weather, aging infrastructure, and growing wildfire risks are putting this critical system under pressure. All of this combined makes the electric utility industry the greatest opportunity for tackling climate change.
One of the leading causes of catastrophic wildfires and power outages? Trees and brush coming into contact with power lines.
That’s where we help. At Overstory, we use AI and advanced satellite imagery to pinpoint and prioritize vegetation risks before they materialize. By giving utilities critical analysis on those risks, we’re helping prevent outages, reduce wildfire risks, and accelerate the transition to a safer, more resilient grid.
Our team spans the Americas and Europe, and we work with utility partners across the Americas and beyond. We’re outdoor enthusiasts, musicians, artists, athletes, parents, and adventurers. What unites us is a passion for solving complex problems, a commitment to climate action, and the belief that technology should be a force for good.
Join us to help us build a more resilient world together.
Role & Team
You’ll lead a core part of our Vegetation Intelligence, the product area that turns remote sensing imagery and data into the vegetation insights that utilities act on every day, through world-class machine learning models. It’s one of Overstory’s most foundational products, live with customers now, and it sits at the center of how we prevent outages and stop wildfires. Every missed tree is an outage or a fire that could have been prevented.
The job is twofold. One is real ML-adjacent work: pushing our detection models further and turning their raw outputs into risk data precise enough for customers to trust and act on. You’ll need to be comfortable with complex machine learning models and geospatial data, close to the data science and engineering teams, and fluent enough in model trade-offs to make good calls with data scientists and ML engineers.
The other side is where you get to build new capabilities: taking that same data and pushing it into new products and capabilities customers don't have yet. You'll run user research, ground new product bets in the decisions customers make in the field, and turn a strong model into products that prevent real fires and real outages.
You’ll report to the Director of Product and own the strategy and roadmap for this product area end to end.
Time Zone Requirement: Europe (GMT/WET, CET, EET) and Eastern North America (NST, AST, EST, CST) Comfortable maintaining 3-4 hours of overlap European working hours for collaboration with the broader Overstory team.
What You'll Do
- Own the roadmap for Vegetation Intelligence, spanning from the ML models that produce our risk data to the products that turn it into customer action.
- Push our detection models further, and help fold their outputs into Overstory’s broader outage and ignition risk models.
- Contribute towards increasing the number of actionable insights: run user research, ground priorities in the operational decisions customers actually make, and make sure what we ship drives real action in the field.
- Shift the roadmap from scaling- and technical-led to customer-driven, without losing the technical rigor that got us here.
- Work closely with data scientists and ML engineers to turn model capability into shipped product value, and define what “good” looks like for a model in production.
- Explore how feedback from customers and end users, like arborists, can improve model performance over time.
- Communicate clearly and often with the broader product and engineering team, so trade-offs, model limits, and priorities stay visible.
- Contribute to Overstory’s broader product strategy so Vegetation Insights supports where the rest of the product is headed
Skills & Experience
- 8+ years of product management experience, with a track record that proves both craft and shipping speed.
- Hands-on experience building and shipping products powered by machine learning models. You understand how models get built, trained, evaluated, and improved, and you can talk model performance and trade-offs directly with data scientists and ML engineers.
- Experience turning a scaling- or technical-led roadmap into a customer-driven one, including running user research and translating it into product priorities.
- Experience working in a fast-paced startup, comfortable with ambiguity and making calls before everything’s fully defined.
- A track record building B2B products that customers rely on daily, including products where the value comes from turning data or model outputs into decisions customers can act on.
- Strong written and verbal communication. You bring clarity to technical trade-offs and bring teams along as priorities shift.
- Experience leading product strategy and roadmapping, and building consensus across product, engineering, and data science
Nice-to-haves
- Experience building geospatial products or working with GIS technologies.
- Experience with complex data products, especially data pipelines and platforms, including ingesting and processing large, diverse datasets from multiple sources.
- Experience building machine learning products for image-based applications, like computer vision or image recognition.
Note: We believe that all people are capable of great things. We encourage you to apply even if you do not meet all of the requirements that are listed within this job description.
What we offer
- Competitive, location-specific compensation and benefits
- Flexible, autonomous and collaborative working environment rooted in trust - we build our work days around our lives, not the other way around
- Home office stipend, coworking and ongoing education budgets
- A company culture that genuinely embodies each of our core values
- To be part of truly mission-driven work that reduces wildfires, protects earth’s natural resources and helps solve our climate crisis
About Our Team
We are a fast-growing team of about 100 people from all over the world. Fifteen nationalities are represented and at last count we speak fourteen languages: English, Dutch, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Luxembourgish, Lithuanian, Bulgarian, Finnish, Estonian, and Afrikaans.
We work remotely from eleven countries and are looking for candidates that are living and working in one of them: United States, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Ireland, Estonia, Portugal, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and Canada. We gather once a year in-person for our unforgettable team gathering event. We also offer the option to occasionally meet up for in-person collaboration.
Diversity & Inclusion
The climate crisis is a human crisis that requires diverse perspectives to solve.
We place enormous value on diversity and believe that the best ideas emerge when people with different backgrounds and experience work together. We remain committed to scaling a team that reflects the communities we serve, and strive to uphold equitable and inclusive practices across every aspect of our business. We are responsible for creating and maintaining a culture where everyone - regardless of background - has a voice in building a sustainable future.
