About Us

The first baby boomers turn 80 this year. Over the next decade, the population most likely to need daily care will grow faster than the buildings, the staff, or the systems available to serve it.

Sage is the care intelligence platform for senior living and skilled nursing. We connect the hardware senior care runs on, including nurse call, fall management, and wander management, with software caregivers actually use. That consistent use is what produces reliable data, and reliable data is what gives operators a true picture of how their communities are running.

Sage is a collaborative team of ambitious, multi-disciplinary entrepreneurs on a mission to reinvent senior care with a modern operating system for caregivers. Millions of people depend on this care getting better, and we move with the urgency that deserves.

About This Role

As Sage's first General Counsel, you'll lead our legal function and serve as a trusted advisor to the CEO, leadership team, and board. This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys doing the work themselves while building the legal infrastructure needed to support a rapidly scaling healthcare technology company.

Your immediate priority will be owning commercial contracting and developing the templates, playbooks, and processes that enable our sales organization to move quickly. You'll also provide practical guidance across healthcare regulatory, privacy, corporate governance, and product matters, partnering with outside counsel when specialized expertise is required.

As Sage expands into skilled nursing, introduces new revenue streams, and develops products involving resident data and AI, you'll play a foundational role in helping the business scale while managing legal risk.

Responsibilities

• Own commercial contracting end to end, including enterprise SaaS agreements, MSAs, BAAs, DPAs, hardware and installation agreements, partnerships, and vendor contracts
• Build scalable legal infrastructure, including contract templates, negotiation playbooks, fallback positions, and approval processes that enable the GTM team to close standard deals with minimal legal involvement
• Serve as the primary legal advisor to the CEO, leadership team, and board, translating complex legal considerations into practical business recommendations
• Identify and manage healthcare regulatory, privacy, and compliance risks, including those related to emerging reimbursement models, partnering with specialist outside counsel where appropriate
• Partner with Engineering on customer security and privacy diligence, HIPAA-related commitments, and the legal aspects of incident response
• Advise Product and Engineering on legal considerations involving resident data, HIPAA, AI, connected hardware, and risk allocation for life-safety products
• Support corporate governance, equity administration, financing readiness, intellectual property, and employment matters
• Select and manage outside counsel, balancing legal risk, business priorities, and cost as the company scales

Minimum Qualifications

• JD and active bar membership in good standing, with admission in New York or eligibility for registration as in-house counsel
• 10+ years of legal experience, including significant experience negotiating complex enterprise SaaS or technology agreements
• Deep commercial contracting expertise, with the ability to independently own negotiations and develop scalable contracting processes that improve deal velocity
• Working knowledge of healthcare privacy and regulatory considerations, particularly HIPAA, with the judgment to identify issues and engage specialists when needed
• Experience advising senior executives and translating legal risks into actionable business recommendations
• Comfortable operating independently, building processes from scratch, and remaining hands-on in a fast-moving environment
• Strong commercial judgment, a collaborative approach, and the ability to balance legal risk with business priorities

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as a first or early in-house legal hire, or building legal processes for high-growth technology companies
• Experience in healthcare technology, vertical SaaS, or other regulated industries
• Familiarity with healthcare reimbursement, Medicare/Medicaid, or post-acute care
• Experience supporting corporate governance, venture financing, M&A, or product counseling involving AI and connected devices
