Emory St. Joseph's Hospital Magnet Designation! Description Job Summary: Plans, coordinates, and directs the daily operations of a specific shift on a clinical unit. Supervises staff and facilitates communication with physicians and internal administrators to provide optimal patient and family‑centered care. Recognized as a change agent, leading efforts to strengthen organizational systems that support the mission, vision, and values of the department. Demonstrates creative problem‑solving, conflict negotiation, and collaboration, with insight, judgment, and clinically sound risk‑taking. Role models expert communication skills, foresight regarding nursing care impact, and expert clinician leadership within their specialty. Completes employee conferences, risk management, and unit management reports within specified timelines, identifies revision needs, evaluates operational forms, coordinates resources for optimal patient outcomes, and ensures compliance with policies and procedures. Remains informed of innovative clinical trends through benchmarking and evidence‑based practice. Functions as charge nurse, models delegation skills, and assists colleagues in effective delegation using the Synergy model for care. Primary duties and responsibilities: Clinical Leadership and Mentorship Mentors other Registered Nurses to the role and functions of Charge Nurse. Leads and coordinates team behavior, fostering leadership skills in others. Provides direction and guidance on policies, scheduling, assignments, organizational skills, and daily operations. Completes performance reviews with Nurse Manager input as appropriate. Incorporates Synergy model for care in nurse/patient assignments. Operational Management and Compliance Evaluates resource use and cost containment activities. Coordinates unit staffing to meet departmental needs. Identifies one managerial problem and initiates change testing. Participates in regulatory agency reviews. Assists in budget planning, cost containment, staffing schedules, and communication of concerns to the Unit Director. Evaluates policy impact on daily operations. Supports administrative decisions and facilitates daily operational issues with staff. Ensures compliance with educational requirements through scheduling, planning, and support. Communication, Conflict Resolution, and Advocacy Hears and understands another’s point of view. Demonstrates and role‑models effective communication skills. Builds an environment fostering open, candid communication. Acts as arbitrator in nursing staff conflict resolution. Corrects unacceptable communication/behavior as needed. Counsels employees (e.g., verbal warnings for attendance & performance issues). Supports units and colleagues with non‑judgmental behaviors. Empowers and advocates for nurses. Addresses customer concerns and complaints, following up with Unit Director and risk management. Handles escalated patient issues and refers to Unit Director or Patient Advocate when unresolved. Monitors issues and their resolution. Quality Improvement and Education Challenges and shapes systems on the unit and hospital-wide to achieve best outcomes. Implements innovative approaches to meet patient and family needs. Recognizes and responds to unit staff needs, ensuring resources and tools are available. Initiates and collaborates on educational programs. Develops management/leadership in‑service (e.g., time management, team building, conflict resolution, budgeting, leadership). Demonstrates current evidence‑based practice and disseminates information. Questions management practice relative to research. Commitments Must meet all Clinical Nurse I Employee Commitments. Achieves points and contact hours as defined in the PLAN (clinical lattice) point system to maintain position. Qualifications Minimum Required: Education: Graduate of an accredited prelicensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Experience: 2 years of recent nursing experience and a minimum of 2 years in the area of concentration. Licensure: Valid, unencumbered Registered Nursing License approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing. Certification: BLS; ACLS may be required for certain departments, post‑hire; additional certifications may be required by department and specialty; active compact/multi‑state license (eNLC) required within 60 days of hire for virtual care activities that may include multi‑state practice. PLAN: Must meet all Clinical Nurse Employee Commitments; complete electives/points and contact hours as defined in the PLAN; complete UCN/SNM criteria requirements within nine (9) months of promotion or hire (including Enhancing your Communication HLC#6488, formal preceptor training workshop, and LEAP course enrollment). Preferred Qualifications: MSN or DNP. Physical Requirements Medium‑Heavy: 36‑75 lbs, 0‑33% of the workday (occasionally); 20‑35 lbs, 34‑66% of the workday (frequently); 10‑20 lbs, 67‑100% of the workday (constantly); lifting up to 75 lbs; carrying up to 35 lbs; occasional to frequent standing & walking; occasional sitting; close eye work (computers, typing, reading, writing). Environmental Factors Potential exposure to blood‑borne pathogens, bio‑hazardous waste, chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors, communicable diseases, electrical shock, floor surfaces, hot/cold temperatures, indoor/outdoor conditions, latex, lighting, patient care/handling injuries, radiation, shift work, travel may be required; use of personal protective equipment, including respirators.
