Job Details Location: CHS - Astoria, NY 11105 Position Type: Per Diem Salary Range: $110.00 - $110.00 Hourly Shift: .003 Category: Physician Health Services for the Correctional Health Services (CHS) of New York City Health + Hospitals (H+H) provides medical care, mental health care, and discharge planning in the jail system. Approximately 25% of new admissions per year receive care on the mental health service. The service strives to provide safe, holistic and evidence‑based therapeutic interventions for a diverse range of mental health issues in the incarcerated population. It offers comprehensive modalities including specialty housing units for individuals with serious mental illness, a 24‑hour on‑call psychiatric service, robust creative arts programming, a strong DBT training program, clinics in each facility, substance use treatment, integrated re‑entry services, and collaboration with multiple training institutions. Staff physicians provide primary care to patients in jail‑based clinics, perform intake evaluation and treatment, and provide emergency care with the support of Emergency Medicine physicians. The healthcare system is a single‑payer system that requires no physician time dedicated to billing. No administrative work is expected outside of work hours, promoting career/life balance. Physicians work as part of a care delivery team with strong administrative support staff, integrated nursing and mental health. Responsibilities Completes comprehensive histories and physicals on all new admissions. Diagnose and treat acute and chronic illness. Evaluate the need for consult services and submit the prioritized consult when indicated. Review all on‑island/off‑island specialty consult clinic and hospital returns. Evaluate recommendations to ensure that the standard of care is met and implement the recommendations of the consultant. Respond to emergencies and fire drills on a priority basis and in a timely and professional manner. Be familiar with performance indicators (P.I.) and take appropriate measures to comply with these standards. Request radiology exams, lab tests, and EKGs when indicated, and interpret these results in conjunction with the patient’s clinical status. Notify Urgicare for 3‑hour/EMS runs. Generate medical modifications as needed. Maintain clinical competency by reviewing CHS protocols, current medical literature and C.M.E.’s. Provide clinical supervision for P.A.’s/N.P.’s, including co‑signing notes and medication orders. Ensure that the standard of care is maintained. Adhere to policies and procedures of CHS and review them as needed. Attend all mandatory in‑services. Comply with and maintain Employee Health requirements. This position is located on Rikers Island. Qualifications Registered to practice medicine in the State of New York and have Federal DEA, BCLS or ACLS, and Infection Control Certification. Medical Specialty License or Certification. Board certified or Board eligible in specified area of medical specialty. 3 to 5 years of directly related experience, including residency in a directly related medical specialty. Familiar with EHR.
