Job Title & Code ADVANCED PRACTICE PROFESSIONALS – Clinical Lead APP, Heart & Vascular Institute – Cardiothoracic Surgery (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) Department Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI) Reports To Direct Supervisor, Administrative Director of HVI and Senior APP/Director from Office of Advanced Practice Professionals FLSA Status Exempt Position Summary The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) will continue with core duties and responsibilities outlined in the job description as an APP within the Heart and Vascular Institute Cardiothoracic Surgery service line. The APP coordinates the clinical aspects related to the Heart and Vascular Institute including education, advancement of skills, and maintenance of the APP scope of practice. Healthcare services are provided in compliance with state law, professional licensing and certification requirements, and hospital privileges where applicable. MUST OBTAIN WV and VA LICENSE FOR THIS ROLE Minimum Qualifications for Nurse Practitioner Graduate from a CCNE accredited nursing program with a master’s degree in nursing. National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers. Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a registered nurse and advanced practice registered nurse in West Virginia. American Heart Association BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department. Experience (Nurse Practitioner) Must have at least three years’ experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Preferred Qualifications (Nurse Practitioner) ACNPs or FNPs. Minimum Qualifications for Physician Assistant Bachelor's degree or master's degree as a Physician Assistant is required. Graduate from an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant (PA) training program are required. Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants is required. Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine. American Heart Association BLS Certification required with additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department. Experience (Physician Assistant) Must have at least three years’ experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Preferred Qualifications (Physician Assistant) Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant preferred. Core Duties and Responsibilities Manages inpatient APP personnel to ensure the availability of appropriately credentialed, clinically competent, and well-developed workforce to meet patient care needs. Functions as a staff role model by promoting cooperative problem-solving, positive progressive discipline, individual and group goal orientation, appropriate delegation of division duties/activities, and the building of esprit de corps through coaching, counseling, and regular attendance at meetings. Assists in the development and implementation of ongoing educational programs for professional and support staff, including orientation, in-service continuing education, procedural training, and new equipment systems training. Manages the inpatient personnel to ensure adequate APP coverage in inpatient settings. Maintains effective communication with Medical Staff, patients, staff, and other departments to identify problems and provide resolution. Communicates effectively with physicians, nurses, and other personnel in problem identification and resolution in a timely manner. Works in conjunction with the staff and department leadership of HVI to disseminate necessary information by written and/or verbal means. Identifies areas of opportunity for improved efficiency and quality through the Performance Improvement process. Communicates employee concerns to the appropriate personnel, as applicable. Plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates the delivery of care in accordance with standards of practice and care. Collaborates with medical staff of assigned facilities to ensure that APP care is consistent with local and regional medical staff procedures. Facilitates the professional development of personnel, overseeing and participating in orientation, training, and continuing education. Directs and monitors instruction, supervision, and evaluation of students and new employees. Assures continuous personal and professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars, and monitoring staff orientation plans. Identifies current and anticipated future department educational needs and collaborates with leadership in development of education plans. Improves and maintains personal management skills through self-development activities such as seminars, workshops, and literature review. Participates in research and quality initiatives. Other duties may be assigned by department leadership or Chair of HVI. Physical Requirements Heavy/Hard Work: Strength and/or stamina to lift, move, stoop, reach, position patients, stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40+ pounds.
