Heersink School of Medicine-Open Rank-Surgery (Cardiothoracic) Title: Heersink School of Medicine-Open Rank-Surgery (Cardiothoracic) Assignment Category: Full-Time Rank: Open Rank Payroll Status: Faculty 12 The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Heersink School of Medicine, Department of Surgery, is recruiting a PhD scientist or surgeon-scientist with a strong track record in cardiovascular health services and outcomes research to serve in a joint appointment supporting the Division of Vascular Surgery & Endovascular Therapy and the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. The position enhances the research mission, mentorship infrastructure, and extramural funding portfolio of both divisions through leadership in cardiovascular outcomes science, registry‑based research, clinical trials methodology, and health services investigation. Key Responsibilities Lead independent cardiovascular outcomes and health services research programs. Maintain a strong record of extramural funding, particularly NIH support. Collaborate with vascular surgery, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiology, biostatistics, and population health investigators. Mentor surgical faculty, trainees, and junior investigators in research design, analysis, and manuscript preparation. Support division‑wide and departmental research strategy and infrastructure. Contribute to institutional research initiatives, registries, and clinical trials. Required Qualifications Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. Nationally recognized expertise in cardiovascular outcomes or health services research. Demonstrated record of independent extramural funding, preferably NIH. Strong publication record in high‑impact peer‑reviewed journals. Experience mentoring trainees and junior faculty. Preferred Qualifications Experience with registry‑based and real‑world evidence generation. Expertise in clinical trial design and statistical methodology. Experience in implementation science and quality improvement. Experience in grant development and multi‑center collaborative research.
