AREA CHIEF OF STAFF The pay range for this role (full‑time) is $128,635–$185,806 annually. This position is eligible for variable pay based on production in all states except Puerto Rico. The pay range reflects a general hiring range for the area; the specific rate is determined based on the candidate’s experience, skill level, abilities, and education, and may vary depending on location and schedule. SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE AND FUNCTION The Area Chief of Staff leads, develops, and manages associate veterinarians in their hospitals to ensure Banfield attracts, develops, engages, and retains doctors who deliver quality care and meet expected hospital performance measures. This role drives the culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) in assigned hospitals to ensure that every pet receives consistent care aligned with our six domains of quality: safe, effective, patient/client centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits, and manage controlled substance inventory for relief doctors. Own doctor engagement and retention by assessing risk, ensuring proactive retention strategies, and creating a culture of community and engagement. Provide effective medical leadership to hospital teams, driving an inclusive and collaborative work environment in partnership with practice managers. Validate the clinical skillset and alignment with quality standards of doctors, veterinary assistants, and veterinary technicians by performing medical record reviews, quality assignments, audits, and patient safety event reviews. Provide veterinary services; time spent in clinical role varies per hospital, hospital size, and productivity. Serve 100% hospital‑based working manager role and spend a percentage of time in clinical role as appropriate. Oversee coaching program for newly hired veterinarians to ensure engaging experiences and knowledge of Banfield quality standards, Optimum Wellness Plans, and workflows. Partner with Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition team to recruit veterinary talent and act as brand ambassador in local veterinary community. Deliver excellent hospital experiences to student externs, student job program participants, and veterinary candidates during hospital observations. Work with associate doctors to ensure they meet productivity goals through high‑quality medicine, preventive care focus, and partnership with hospital team. Deliver veterinary operations KPIs and enhance hospital performance under practice manager partnership. Develop veterinary leadership talent bench and succession plan for assigned hospital pod. Ensure compliance with Banfield's clinical essentials, government regulations, and veterinary industry standards via assessments, audits, and event reviews. Meet local, state, and federal regulatory requirements, including controlled substance management and radiation safety. Create and execute plans to resolve identified gaps. Champion preventive care culture through communication, demonstration, and validation of behaviors that drive optimum wellness plan growth and retention. Create a “say yes” culture by driving access to care and superior client service to meet or exceed client experience scorecard goals. Resolve client complaints related to medical standard of care in a timely manner. Manage medical equipment inventory and new equipment requests in partnership with Director of Veterinary Quality. Deliver highest level of veterinary care in professional ethical manner while ensuring exceptional client experiences. Establish trust and compliance of clients through preventive care delivery, diagnostics, treatment plans, home care instruction, and follow‑up planning. Other job duties as assigned. EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree. Valid veterinary license in good standing; eligibility for licensure on all applicable state boards. 3 years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery practice.
