Job Description Summary Certified Anesthesiology Assistant is responsible for perioperative management of patients where anesthesia services are indicated. Duties include pre‑operative, intra‑operative, and post‑operative evaluation of patients requiring anesthetized surgical and non‑surgical procedures. The AA administers appropriate anesthetics within a written practice protocol developed in collaboration with the attending anesthesiologist, uses anesthesia machines and equipment, assists in patient transport, maintains patient records, participates in teaching activities, attends continuing education programs, and demonstrates professionalism in the performance of all duties. The AA also provides resuscitative care as indicated. Eight operating suites and two cardiac cath labs are on level 3. The second‑floor procedure area includes two endoscopy suites, two minor procedure rooms, and an interventional radiology suite in development. Other non‑operating room sites covered include CT, MRI, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology, and a hem‑oncology procedure room. Coverage includes all pediatric surgical specialties including cardiovascular, trauma, oncology, transplant, orthopedics, neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, ophthalmology, general surgery, dental, and plastics. The University Hospital operating area is the central receiving unit within a level‑one, academic trauma center. Twenty‑one OR suites cover all surgical specialties including trauma, transplant, orthopedics, neurology, ENT, GU‑GYN, robotics, and burns, plus an interventional radiology suite. Other non‑operating room sites include CT, MRI, bronch, neuro‑angio, and interventional radiology. The practice group has about 42 CRNAs; most work three shifts of 13.5 hours per week, with 24‑hour shift staff covering most nights and limited 10‑hour shifts. Self‑scheduling is volunteer‑based for weekends, holidays, and night coverage. The MUSC Ashley River Towers hospital is an adult‑care academic facility with 10 operating rooms and a robust NORA practice including 7 endoscopy areas and 6 heart and vascular and interventional radiology suites. OR coverage for the CRNA practice includes surgical oncology, colorectal, bariatrics, plastics, and occasional vascular/thoracic cases. Rutledge Tower Ambulatory Surgery consists of 9 ORs for adult outpatient and inpatient populations. Ambulatory service groupings are ENT, oral surgery, adult dentistry, ophthalmology, plastics, gynecology, urology, pain management, orthopedics, surgical oncology, endocrine, and colorectal. Hours per week: 40 Fair Labor Standards Act status: Hourly Minimum Training and Education Evidenced successful completion of an Anesthesiologist Assistant program certified by the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants. Current certification from an agency recognized by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners and the Anesthesiologist’s Assistant Committee. Evidence of licensure, or ability, by the South Carolina Board of Medical Examiners. Must demonstrate current competency in the clinical privileges extended, proficiency in anesthesia equipment operation, current knowledge of anesthesia practice, and basic knowledge of safety in a health care facility. Must exhibit knowledge of universal precautions, establish and maintain effective working relationships with surgeons, residents, anesthesia personnel, and nursing staff. Guidelines for practice are described in departmental policy and procedure book. AAs practice under the clinical supervision of an anesthesiologist and the administrative supervision of the CRNA manager for their cost center. Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations Must be recognized as a Certified AA with current license to practice, or eligible to obtain practice in the state of South Carolina. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an American Heart Association (AHA). Current certification in Advanced Life Support (ACLS) from the American Heart Association. Physical Requirements Ability to perform job functions while standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, working indoors and outdoors in temperature extremes, from elevated areas, and in confined/cramped spaces. Ability to perform job functions from kneeling, bending, twisting at waist, squatting, and reaching overhead. Ability to perform fine and gross manipulation with fingers and hands, and repetitive motions with hands, wrists, elbows, and shoulders.
