Senior Physician Assistant – Gastroenterology Kaiser Permanente – Oakland, CA Job Summary Under the direction of a supervising physician, the Senior Physician Assistant provides high quality, efficient, team‑based patient‑focused care. Responsibilities may include managing patients in the office, hospital, ED, and/or perioperative setting. The PA may be required to first assist in the OR or perform department‑specific procedures and may also facilitate on‑call responsibilities. Daily responsibilities vary based on department and physician needs and may require evening or weekend hours. The PA’s experience and competency allow them to provide clinical and operational expertise and mentor less experienced PAs. Essential Responsibilities Work as part of a team under the direction of a supervising physician. Perform comprehensive physical examinations, compile medical data, and administer diagnostic tests (imaging, ECG, laboratory). Interpret test results and develop treatment plans. Perform therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, wound care, and infection management. Perform department‑specific diagnostic or therapeutic procedures. Record progress notes and assist in continuity of care. Counsel patients on compliance, development, family planning, emotional issues, and general health maintenance. Facilitate admissions, transfers, discharges, and round on inpatients. Conduct admission evaluations, document findings, and report deviations to attending physician. Provide pre‑operative/pre‑procedure education and peri‑operative support. Assist in surgical procedures, perform suturing, start IVs, perform peri‑operative procedures. Enter post‑operative orders, monitor patients during recovery, review vital signs, labs and diagnostic studies. Facilitate discharge and produce discharge and transfer summaries. Other Duties The Senior Physician Assistant may collaborate with the supervising physician, manager, and other department members on performance improvement activities and serve as a mentor for less experienced PAs. Basic Qualifications Minimum three (3) years of experience as a physician assistant in the last five (5) years. Graduate from an ARC‑PA accredited physician assistant program. California Physician Assistant License at hire. National Provider Identifier at hire. Physician Assistant National Certificate at hire. Basic Life Support certification. Additional Requirements Fluoroscopy Permit required (or must be obtained within 18 months) for Orthopedics, Interventional Radiology, and Radiation Oncology. Experience and competency in department‑specific tasks as required. Ability to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment. Preferred Qualifications Advanced certification in a specialty area. External hires must pass a background check/drug screen.
