Senior Counsel – Patent – Medicinal/Pharmaceutical Chemistry Amgen’s mission is to serve patients living with serious illnesses. In this role you will develop, implement, and execute global intellectual property strategies for Amgen’s therapeutic products and product candidates, including small molecules and peptides, across various regions. Responsibilities Work with Amgen scientists to identify patentable subject matter Draft, file, and prosecute patent applications worldwide Conduct prior art searches and analyze patents to prepare freedom‑to‑operate opinions Perform due diligence to support licensing activities Negotiate and draft research agreements Provide legal advice and counsel to R&D and business partners on a variety of IP related matters Assist with litigation‑related matters and challenge/defend patents in PTAB, opposition, and other forums Qualifications J.D. or LL.M. from an accredited U.S. law school, admission to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction 4+ years of experience practicing intellectual property law and registered to practice before the USPTO 10+ years of experience in biotechnology related IP at a law firm or biopharma corporation Experience in all aspects of U.S. and foreign IP law relating to biotechnology Advanced degree (master’s or Ph.D.) in organic or medicinal chemistry is preferred Excellent analytical, legal drafting, oral and written communication skills Strong management and leadership skills with a client‑service focus Ability to work independently and in teams, prioritize workflow, meet demanding deadlines, and manage multi‑dimensional projects in a fast‑paced environment Experience in U.S. and/or foreign adversarial proceedings (e.g., patent litigation, IPR, PGR, oppositions) Benefits Competitive salary range: $250,321.60–$338,670.40 per year (excluding Puerto Rico) Health and welfare plans for staff and eligible dependents Retirement and savings plan with generous company contributions Group medical, dental, and vision coverage; life and disability insurance; flexible spending accounts Discretionary annual bonus program and stock‑based long‑term incentives Time‑off and flexible work models where possible Equal Opportunity Employer Amgen is an Equal Opportunity Employer and will consider all qualified applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, protected veteran status, disability status, or any other basis protected by law.
