Role Summary TITLE: Program Director (Health)ORGANIZATION: National Governors AssociationLOCATION: Washington, DC (onsite)DURATION: Full TimePOSITION STATUS: ExemptCOMPENSATION: A competitive compensation package will be made to the qualified candidateREPORTS TO: Managing Director, Center for Best Practices Key Responsibilities The Program Director’s primary responsibilities are to lead a small team that provides support to governors and state executive branch leaders on a broad range of health policy issues. The Director will develop policy principles, produce resources for national debate, manage staff, develop project concepts, secure funding, and facilitate collaboration across agencies and sectors. Lead a team of policy experts and maintain working knowledge of new issues. Oversee multiple projects, project managers, consultants, and subcontracts with states and external partners. Analyze project budgets, project future spending, and develop financial proposals for new efforts. Communicate clearly in verbal and written form to state and federal officials, national experts, and other stakeholders. Design project concepts and identify funding opportunities; write concepts papers and proposals; build relationships with philanthropic, public, corporate, and federal funders. Manage wide‑scale projects with multiple staff and tasks simultaneously in coordination with diverse stakeholders. Organize and facilitate workshops, conferences, seminars, panel discussions, and state strategy sessions. Identify and track key governor concerns; develop initiatives; connect governors’ staff with external experts. Demonstrate commitment to NGA’s mission and serve governors’ needs. Other duties as assigned by the Center for Best Practices President and Managing Director. Oversee employees responsible for meeting project goals; set performance goals; evaluate staff outcomes; implement internal control policies and procedures. Qualifications Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree, preferably in public policy or a related field, and 8–10 years of experience in health policy programs, including evidence‑based policy design and implementation, with governors or in federal/state agencies, or in non‑profit, foundation, or corporate settings. Experience working with high‑level state policymakers in multiple settings. Experience organizing small and large‑scale convenings, presenting subject‑matter expertise or serving as panelists. Strong interpersonal skills to engage diverse stakeholders. Ability to manage budgets on multiple projects with federal and foundation grants. Ability to handle highly sensitive information. Capacity to manage a professional team that works independently and with others in a dynamic environment. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Travel as necessary. Compensation Salary Range: $150,000 - $190,000 annually. The final salary offered will be based on qualifications and experience. NGA is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
