Area Chief of Staff The primary purpose of the Area Chief of Staff (ACOS) is to lead, develop, and manage associate veterinarians in their hospitals to attract, develop, engage, and retain doctors who deliver quality care and meet performance measures. This role is a fully hospital‑based, 100% working manager position with variable pay based on production. Essential Responsibilities Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits as required by law. Own doctor engagement and retention by consistently assessing risk, ensuring a proactive retention strategy, and creating a culture of community and engagement. Provide effective medical leadership to hospital teams, driving an inclusive and collaborative work environment in partnership with practice managers. Validate the clinical skillset and alignment with quality standards of doctors, veterinary assistants, and veterinary technicians through medical record reviews, audits, and patient safety event reviews. Provide veterinary services; time spent in clinical role depends on number of hospitals, direct reports, and productivity. Oversee the coaching program for newly hired veterinarians to ensure an engaging experience and development of clinical, surgical, and dental skills. Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent and act as a brand ambassador in the local veterinary community. Collaborate with associate doctors to ensure they meet productivity goals through high‑quality medicine, preventive care, and client experience. Deliver veterinary operations KPI’s of assigned hospitals and develop plans to achieve target KPI’s. Develop a veterinary leadership talent bench and succession plan for the assigned hospital pod. Ensure compliance with Banfield’s clinical essentials, government regulations, and veterinary industry standards through assessments, audits, and patient safety reviews. Champion a preventive care culture by communicating, demonstrating, and validating behaviors that drive wellness plan growth and retention. Create a say‑yes culture by driving access to care and superior client service to meet or exceed client experience scorecard goals. Resolve client complaints related to medical standard of care in a timely manner. Manage the medical equipment inventory and new medical equipment requests in partnership with Director of Veterinary Quality. Deliver the highest level of veterinary care to every pet in a professional and ethical manner. Establish trust and gain the confidence of clients through thorough preventive care, diagnostic workups, treatment plans, and client communication. Other duties as assigned. Special Working Conditions Ability to work at a computer for long periods. Project timelines may require more than 40 hours per week. Exposure to pets that may bite or scratch, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and controlled substances. Some travel required for vendor visits and associate education. Licensing and Certifications Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree required. Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with all applicable state veterinary boards. 3 years of experience in small animal medicine and surgery practice. Candidate must obtain state-controlled substance and federal DEA license within 3 months of employment. Accredited by USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service within 3 months of employment.
