AREA CHIEF OF STAFF The primary purpose and function of the Area Chief of Staff is to lead, develop, and manage associate veterinarians in their hospitals to ensure Banfield can attract, develop, engage, and retain doctors that deliver quality care and meet expected hospital performance measures. The position drives the culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) in assigned hospitals to ensure that every pet receives consistent care aligning with our six domains of quality: safe, effective, patient/client centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care. SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE AND FUNCTION The Area Chief of Staff partners with Practice Managers (if applicable) to drive quality care culture, and works across hospitals to support clinical excellence, operational performance, and staff engagement. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. Act as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary and Pharmacy Board Permits, and manage controlled substance inventory. Own doctor engagement and retention, assessing risk, ensuring proactive retention strategy, and fostering a supportive culture. Provide effective medical leadership, driving an inclusive and collaborative work environment with Practice Managers. Validate clinical skillset and quality alignment of doctors, veterinary assistants, and technicians through record reviews, audits, and patient safety event reviews. Perform veterinary services; time in clinical role varies by hospital count and performance. Oversee the coaching program for newly hired veterinarians, ensuring engagement and knowledge of Banfield standards, Optimum Wellness Plans, and workflows. Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent and act as a brand ambassador in the local community. Deliver an exceptional hospital experience to student externs, job program participants, and candidates during observations. Support associate doctors in achieving productivity goals through high-quality medicine and client experience. Lead the delivery of veterinary operations KPIs, develop, execute, and revise plans to achieve targeted KPIs. Accountable for hospital OGSM performance; ensure quality medicine drives operational outcomes. Develop a veterinary leadership talent bench and succession plan for assigned hospital pod. Ensure compliance with Banfield's clinical essentials, government regulations, and industry standards through continuous assessments. Manage medical equipment inventory and new equipment requests in partnership with the Director of Veterinary Quality. Ensure resolution of client complaints related to medical standard of care. Champion preventive care culture, driving optimum wellness plan growth and retention. Create a “yes” culture, driving access to care and superior client service to meet or exceed client experience scorecard goals. Other duties as assigned. SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS Work at a computer for long periods; may require 40 hours/week to meet deadlines. Requires good motor, visual, and hand‑eye coordination, ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Exposure to pets, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances. Some travel to assist area hospitals, vendor visits, and associate education. REQUIREMENTS Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree. Veterinary license in good standing. 3 years of small‑animal medicine and surgery experience.
