The University of Miami Department of Hematology has an exciting opportunity for a full‑time Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in Miami. The APP delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients and examines and treats patients independently and in collaboration with other healthcare professionals. The APP prescribes medications, orders diagnostic tests, and advises patients about continuing care. APP CORE JOB FUNCTIONS Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories. Functions independently to perform age‑appropriate history and physical for patients. Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age‑specific needs. Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic treatment modalities. Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiological stability. Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations. Monitors the effectiveness of interventions. Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between healthcare settings, e.g., admitting, transferring, and discharging patients. Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals. Facilitates staff, patient, and family decision making by providing educational tools. Adheres to University and unit‑level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. Clinical Settings University of Miami Hospital – 1400 NW 12 Ave, Miami, Florida 33136 University of Miami Hospital and Clinics/Sylvester Cancer Center – 1475 NW 12th Ave, Miami, Florida 33136 DEPARTMENT OF HEMATOLOGY SPECIFIC JOB FUNCTIONS I. Clinical (Both Ambulatory and Inpatient) Assess the physical and psychosocial status of clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies. Recognize deviations from normal in the physical assessment. Work in collaboration with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow‑up. Write prescriptions for medications and blood products based upon laboratory results, orders and interpret routine diagnostic and follow‑up studies, therapeutic measures, and post‑discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols. Request written consultation from physicians and other healthcare professionals to ensure appropriate and quality patient care. Assess and follow consult patients when required and independently of physician when needed. Interpret and evaluate findings of studies/tests and intervene accordingly. Advise collaborating physician of appropriate information regarding patient care and report to the physician the actions provided to the patients. Evaluate the quality of care provided and recommend changes for improvement. Initiate appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the clients. Answer patient‑related inquiries via all forms of telecommunication throughout the system (Telephone, Email, Secure Chat, In‑basket messaging, etc.). Assist in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care. Conduct or participate in multidisciplinary rounds and ensure appropriate and quality care for patients. Perform patient triage and determine the urgency of physician’s evaluation. Provide symptom management for side effects related to hematologic oncologic treatment. Assist with peer‑to‑peer authorizations and filling out medical forms for patients. Ensure that the clinic runs smoothly and efficiently, corresponding with referring physicians and patients to provide adequate coordination of care to improve outcomes. Perform bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures with IT chemo, Omaya reservoir access, PICC line removals and skin biopsies if competency is met. Act as a preceptor for APP students, fellows and new APP staff as appropriate. II. Research CITI certification within three months of employment. Facilitate clinical research protocols and coordinate patient care with research staff. Review clinical trial options with patients and families. Interview and examine research subjects. Evaluate research subjects’ appropriateness for study inclusion/enrollment. Follow all regulatory requirements for human subjects’ research compliance and documentation. Monitor, review study related labs and imaging, and provide ongoing follow‑up to hematology patients on clinical trials. Triage research patient communication. Report SAEs and AEs to designated research staff. Communicate with the PIs and Sub‑PIs with questions or concerns regarding holding or continuing investigational or standard of care treatment. Perform study related procedures if competency is met. Supervision is received from the Hematology APP Supervisor/Director, the Division Chief of Hematology, or a collaborating physician. DEPARTMENT OF HEMATOLOGY SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS State license. Board certification. CITI certification or within three months of employment. BLS. ACLS. Minimum two years of Hematology experience as an Advanced Practice Provider. OCN or AOCNP preferred.
