Position Overview The Director of Public Safety is responsible for the safety of the College Community, protection of campus facilities, management of departmental activities, preparation of the departmental budget, and supervision of department personnel and programs. The Director reports to the Vice President for Administration and Finance. Key Responsibilities Deploy a community policing system that promotes safety on campus and administer policies and programs that build trusting and positive relationships with students and employees. Recruit, select, train and mentor all department personnel. Prepare, file and ensure compliance with all New York State Division of Criminal Justice (DCJS) and statutory requirements, including Peace Office Registry information and training certifications. Establish departmental strategic goals, manage projects and monitor results. Lead the response to complex safety or security incidents on campus and determine the best course of action to promote student success and safety. Develop, approve and implement Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring they remain current relative to College policy and best practices. Supervise the production and accuracy of all department regulatory filings and reports, including incident reports and crime logs. Supervise the Assistant Director, Campus Peace Officers and Security Guards; ensuring adequate coverage of a 24/7/365 operation. Ensure department personnel remain abreast of changes in campus law enforcement policy and practice. Assess job performance of department personnel and recommend actions to the Vice President. Coordinate incident reporting and management with relevant College administrators. Address matters with sensitivity to a college environment and maintain confidentiality. Serve as Chair of the Campus Safety Advisory Committee and the Critical Incident Team. Propose enhancements to the College’s Emergency Management Plan to support crisis response. Serve as Incident Commander during a campus safety emergency. Develop and deliver training programs that promote campus safety for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Act as liaison with outside law enforcement agencies. Conduct security assessments, manage access control, key and camera systems, and recommend enhancements. Oversee campus-wide Fire Safety responsibilities, including drills and inspections, in coordination with Facilities, local Fire Departments and EMT services. Plan and administer the departmental budget and ensure operations remain within budget. Carry out managerial assignments and related duties assigned by the Vice President. Ensure compliance with College, SUNY, local and federal legal and regulatory requirements. Qualifications Associate’s degree. Four (4) years of experience as a ranking officer in a police department or as a peace officer. Experience in strategic and operational planning, budgeting and supervision of subordinate managers and staff. A current, valid certificate as a peace or police officer in New York State; a valid New York State pistol permit; a valid New York State driver’s license. Preferred Qualifications Demonstrated ability to manage a complex operation in a union/civil service setting. Emergency Medical Technician certification. Leadership and administrative experience in higher education. Knowledge of community-based policing, traffic management, crowd control, property access control and crime prevention trends. Knowledge of college student development and supportive behavior management practices. Understanding of supervisory and administrative principles in a campus safety setting. Prior successful completion of all NIMS Training courses for an Incident Commander and experience as an Incident Commander on a college campus. Salary A starting salary of $85,257 prorated for a 40‑hour work week, with an excellent benefits package. This position depends on adequate funding.
