Job Overview Job Location: CMO-Herro Family Campus - Chicago, IL 60612. Salary: $105,000 – $120,000 per year. The Director of School Nursing will provide vision and oversight for student health and wellness within an elementary school setting. This is a 12‑month position that includes supporting the duties of a school nurse, leading the nursing network, and providing substitute coverage as needed. School‑Based Nursing Responsibilities Plan the school health program in partnership with medical authorities and school leaders, developing policies and procedures for the schools’ health programs. Monitor compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations; collaborate with child‑support agencies. Collaborate and interact frequently with staff, parents, students, and instructors to identify and meet social, emotional, and physical needs. Provide medical examinations and review findings to evaluate health status of students and progress of the program. Instruct students in health education and provide staff development programs on health‑related topics. Provide first aid care and medically prescribed services to students and staff. Coordinate and maintain health records on students. Adhere strictly to confidentiality policies in the maintenance, care, security, and integrity of student medical records. Collaborate and gather data necessary for evaluations, including the IEP eligibility process. Leadership and Management Responsibilities Provide direct supervision and leadership of all nurses and the health team network wide. Oversee services and ensure proper documentation. Train, coach, and develop nurses—individually and as a team. Participate in recruitment, hiring, and evaluation of nursing and other health‑based staff. Provide vision, mission, and leadership for the health team aligned with the Network and SSS department goals. Ensure all schools meet compliance requirements set forth by the State, Network, and local authorizing districts (e.g., immunizations). Ensure proper documentation and file keeping. Participate as the Certified School Nurse in eligibility and annual meetings for IEPs and 504s, reviewing and signing off on necessary information. Oversee health‑based 504s, IEPs, and health plans and meet compliance requirements related to these plans. Meet regularly with the team and individual nurses. Problem‑solve and respond to school leaders, staff, and/or parent concerns related to health matters. Help lead the Network in health‑related matters, including response to epidemics and pandemics. Work with the nursing team to provide training to all stakeholders as needed; ensure compliance trainings related to health and nursing are provided to all staff. Serve as liaison between the Student Support Services Network team and school‑based health teams; keep the Student Support Services team abreast of team strengths, needs, and new initiatives or research. In collaboration with senior leaders, develop policies and procedures related to health, wellness, or nursing needs as necessary. Perform other duties and tasks as assigned. Qualifications Must hold a BSN and RN, and have a current School Nurse certification in compliance with State/District Requirements (for IL, a PEL with the Certified School Nurse Endorsement). CPR and PALS certification is a plus. Minimum of three 3‑5 years of recent experience as a school nurse with demonstrated leadership experience. Must possess working knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting school health services. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Professional demeanor and ability to express ideas effectively, both orally and in writing. Experience in development and implementation of procedures. Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects, adhering to strict timelines. Detail‑oriented and highly organized. Comfortable interacting with internal and external customers. Ability to defuse situations and organize teams to meet project expectations. High degree of initiative and independent judgment. Ability to tactfully and effectively deal with public and staff in a personable and professional manner. Maintains a high level of energy and a consistent positive attitude. Ability to lead across campuses. Possess expertise in pediatric health and public health. Ability to build relationships with all stakeholders and help others grow. Physical Demands / Travel Physical demands may require standing, bending, reaching high and low, stooping, walking around classrooms, and kneeling. Walking up and down stairs several times a day may occur. Travel across campuses in Illinois and DC. Working Conditions School staff will work in a busy and occasionally noisy environment with multiple concurrent activities. Majority of work will be performed in a general office/school environment. Schedule offers autonomy and flexibility within school calendars and hours.
